DIR-855

DIR-825

DIR-655

DGL-4500

Diagnosis:

From osj: As many others I am facing problems with wireless restarts on my DIR-825. From other threads (like http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5851.0) I have figured out that the problem is related to a certain kind of traffic coming from PCs connected by WIRE to the router. If I connect all my PCs with wireless I see no wireless restarts.

I have seen posts about that Symantec Endpoint (SEP) firewall is causing this behavior, which I also have installed on the PC that I have problems with, however I think there is also another issue. (or maybe SEP is only an indirect cause)

I have captured the packets from my PC while monitoring the wireless restarts, and I have found that packets send to UDP port 5355 to multicast address 224.0.0.252 (via wired ethernet) is causing wireless restart on DIR-825. (Hardware Version: A1 Firmware Version: 1.12NA)

From this description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link-local_Multicast_Name_Resolution it seems to be a kind of DNS packet, and in the packet I see that it contain the name of the computer where I have a shared printer.

If I delete the printer, the packets stops, and the wireless restarts stop…. and I can reproduce the wireless restarts by “replaying” the capture.

I found that mDNS packets send to multicast address 224.0.0.251 by a wired device also cause immediate wireless restart.

Actually the wired PC was not the one with the shared printer, but it was trying to connecting to a remote unavailable printer…. I guess that cause it to send the DNS lookups with a certain interval.

However, even with no remote printers installed – I still see wireless restarts, now caused by mDNS (multicast DNS) packets in my network… I am not sure which application is sending them, but these packets should definitely not cause wireless restart in the D-link router.

Unfortunately I have to realize that it is impossibly to report even very reproducible problems to D-link, because their 1st line support believe that all problems can be solved by “making factory default” or “adjusting the antennas”. It seems to be pure knowledge-base support, it is not possibly to reach a technical support level that even know how to open a Wireshark capture.

Resolution:

From kartrajt: The problem with the constant restarting is one of my wired PCs.
I can have all of the wireless units connected, but when I start the PC in question, the 855 restarts 7-8 times.
I´ve been in contact with Dlink support, but they havent come further than asking me about my different wireless equipment, kinds of wireless-cards, drivers firmware etc. etc.

    Hi There Dlinkedrouter,
I just stumbled across this and, Many folks do not understand why they need a title search or title insurance. The following information addresses what a title search does and what the insurance protects, and was provided by the folks at Island Title Services Corp. here in St. Croix. I hope you will find it helpful.
    Keep up the good work

so it turns out it was my cable modem on my end. I had purchased a sb6120 to resolve what i thought at the time was an issue with my 4 year old cable modem which turned out being a rain issue. I kept it anyway cause it was a docsis 3.0 one. Unfortunately my router kept resetting every four or whenever it felt like that. It wasn’t till I went into the modem ip I could see the modem resetting each time also. So the dlink detected a loss of internet and reset itself along with the modem. Once I bought another one zoom 3.0 the router and modem have been up for 3 days which would have never happened before. So I am getting an rma on the modem and feel good that it was never the router.

I have been experiencing 3 lock ups during one xbox live session when I check the uptime on my connection even now it shows it rebooted 23 minutes ago and I easn’t even home so I know it happens all the time. I will try the dns relay disable option and will update it if that works, thanks for the info!

Just to confirm that since my post above, back in March, and since uninstalling SEP, i have not experienced a single wireless service restart on my 655 for 5 months now. Whilst there may possibly be other reasons out there, in my case, SEP was definitely the problem.

Sad to say that with a DIR-655 A3, with the latest beta firmware 1.34WW, the router wireless restart problem persists, although less frequently than before. I think I am going to try and turn off multicast to see if that helps things.

I have started having problems with my D-Link wireless service restarting every since I got a new work computer running Symanted Endpoint Protection. The work computer is wired to the router. The D-Link works fine when the work computer is off the network or not connected to the work VPN.

I also have the dir-655 and had been struggling with wireless service restarts whenever my wired computer connects to the router. It also has wireless and this doesn’t cause the same problem.

Anyway, today, after reading a thread on restarts on the dlink website, i went home and uninstalled Symantec Endpoint Protection suite on that computer. Lo and behold, for the first time ever, my wireless connection has managed to stay up for more than a minute. Actually, it was up to about 30 minutes when i left it. That is simply unheard of.

In my simplest of tests, wireless restarts from a wired computer is definitely caused by something between SEP and the DIR-655 service.

I have 3 laptops running Norton 360 all connected via Wifi. I have a PS3, an Xbox 360, and a DVR all connected via LAN. With that setup, I never have any issues at all. The only time that the wireless restarts happen is when I bring a laptop home from work and try to connect. We use Symantec Client Firewall at work, and I don’t have any ability to adjust or disable it. I have not tried booting in safe mode, but I will try that next.

The resets do not happen right away. If I stay on a web page and read (or type paragraphs like this), then none of my other machines have a problem. But once my work machine starts generating web traffic, then it loses connectivity along with the other Wifi machines for a few seconds. LAN connections are never affected.

I read on other sites that Norton Endpoint has trouble with IPv6 on D-Link routers, but I can’t confirm that we block this. I’ve tried several of our laptops here (I’m a sysadmin for a large group of laptop users) and they all experience this symptom. I agree that Symantec Client Firewall shouldn’t be a problem – but no one at work can duplicate my issue. However, no one else uses a D-Link! I connected to my old Linksys to do this.

Here is something to think about too. What if you generate non web traffic. i.e. Something that wouldn’t go through a transparent proxy server like a telnet session.

I am wondering if it is something to do with conflicting network settings between the Notebook and the router that is confusing the NAPT table in the router.

If you boot into safe mode with networking then make sure you try web browsing with firefox portable and no settings in the proxy config.

Hi Intrakota and Kyle, firstly, Notorn AV and Firewall (like it or hate it) are mainstream network software and so it is highly likely that the DLink Doosh Bag testers would have done “some” testing with mainstream network software. So I am tipping that it is Norton in combination with something else that is causing the issue, not just Norton on its own or else we would have heard about it by now from many many users.

Does this happen almost straight away when connected to the network? Is it only via LAN or WIFI or is it both? What happens when you disable Norton, do you still have this problem (try booting into safe mode with networking)?

I’m using AVG free anti virus, prior to that I tried Yoggie A.V. too.
I wouldn’t touch Norton with a barge pole, damned resource hog that it is, it may not be your A.V. that’s causing the problem.

I have a DIR-655 and I experience the wireless restarts all of the time when I carry a laptop home from work. At work we use the Symantec firewall and virus software. I have used 2 different D-link routers (I upgraded from a B to the 455) and I have tried several laptops from work. The problem continues frequently. I have a personal laptop and various gaming devices that do NOT cause restarts. I use Norton 360 on my laptop at home.

Recently I tried to connect to my old Linksys router – and lo and behold I stayed connected all weekend without a reset. I’m convinced there is a wireless-restart issue with the Symantec software, but I don’t know how to prove it.

  16. Disconnected cable Dir-855
    March 12, 2010 at 1:05 pm | #20

Well happy to hear I’m not alone. I’ve had DIR-855 with 1.12EU firmware since december. Although my wireless connection seems to be sort of ok, the connection to internet is dropped 5-10 times a day. All the logfiles say is “WAN interface cable has been disconnected” “WAN interface cable has been connected”
This really is frustrating, my last router Linksys WRT54 G had no problems whatsoever. Reason for changing was to get wireless N to the house, which I got but at a cost of disconnecting internet.

Have you tried looking at the Netgear WNDR3500L. The router allows you to install DD-WRT (an open source firmware).

The good thing about this is that DD-WRT is constantly being updated with fixes and features.

We all now realize that no matter how good the router hardware is, if the firmware is useless, then so is the router.

I’ve had 2 DIR-855′s now, the first was purchased in Aug 09 from Amazon.co.uk and was quickly replaced by D-Link when I told them of the problems I was having with reboot’s and disconnections. The replacement unit was slightly better in that it only rebooted 2 or 3 times a day, lucky me haha, anyways Amazon offered to refund me in full for the unit on its return and arranged collection at no cost to myself.
When it worked it was fine, but the problems confirmed that it’s just not upto the job it was designed to do.
Now im also on the lookout for a dualband wireless router that does exactly what it says on the tin to go with my 2 DWA-160 usb adapters.

I ended up with the same problem today. Firmware Version: 1.12EU Hardware Version: A2, DIR 855.

I had just moved a cordless phone basestation directly next to the router – the phone: a Uniden Elite 9035 which operates on 1.8Ghz.

When I read someones comments about cordless phones above it dawned on me, so I moved it back to where it was before, only 30cm away from the router and everything is normal again, wireless links all up, all clients connected…

    That’s easy;

Get the Netgear WNR3500L (must be the L version). It is an opensource router so you can install your own firmware. The popular choice is DD-WRT.

A follow up – DLink finally called me yesterday – the arranged time was 9am and they called at 3pm! They offered to replace with a reconditioned unit and admitted it may not solve the problem. Go figure! So, my question to you clever people out there, has anyone got a recommendation on another manufacturer/product to buy when I trash this unit? Thanks.

Well I konw for a fact that the doosh bags at D-link are well awere of this site and are reading it. However, getting them to pull their thumbs out of their mouths will require more traffic on this site. Spread the word and get more people to post comments.

I make no money from this site, its sole purpose is to warn people about D-Links poor quality firmware and the hope is that it gets fixed due to consumer pressure.

I have the 655. I wish I had checked these comments out before purchasing! I have 4 computers hardwired into the 655 with no problems. I purchased a wireless laptop last month and it restarts all the time. I have spent countless hours with D-Link with no solution. On two occasions they suggested I replace the unit but for some reason they had to call me to arrange???? I took time off work both times to be available for the pre-arranged call and they have not called. Their support is the WORST and they obviously have no answer for the problem but are prepared to waste our time repeating the suggestions that don’t work. My only advice – NEVER but a DLINK product.

    Problem:
I got a DIR-855 and durring the installation it was rebooting all the time and afterward also…

    Identify location of problem:
I have tried all kind of diffent thinks to avoid the problem. I found that when i unplug the cable to the internet the problem was not so frekent.

    Solution:
So i entered the manuel setup of the Inter connection. There i pressed the button “Clone Your PC mac-address”. AND THE ROUTER SHOULD BE REBOTted.
The mac addr. was only zero’s before!!!!

The D-LINK support and quality of the products is the worse in the industry. I have a DIR 655 A4 Hardware with 1.32NA Firmware. The problem of Wireless restarts in there daily. When you try to get a replacement router you get older and older (latest they sent me an A2). The service is possibly the worse I have seen anywhere.

Also bought a Gigabit switch which came DOA.

My Time is worth more than the router. AVOID D-LINK PRODUCTS AT ALL COST support is horrible and the products are not much better.

Well, perhaps I spoke too soon. The problem did go away instantly like I said in my first post but now it is back. This DIR-855 restarts wireless as much as 45 times in a 5 minute period. I currently turned off 2.4Ghz only (5 is still on). The restarts are gone but this is hardly a solution.

I am doubling checking to see if I have some other IPv6 device somewhere on my LAN that is enabled but I don’t think so.

This router has been a disappointment.

I have been experiencing this problem for some time also with my DLink DIR-855 router – working fine initially and then out of nowhere, it restarts the wireless network both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands but mostly just the 2.4Ghz. Nothing on my set up had changed.

I trolled the internet for issues with DLink routers having this problem (DIR-825, DIR-655, etc) as well as other non-DLink routers. I upgraded the firmware to 1.21NA with no luck. I disconnected everything except my one laptop and the router – still rebooting. My logs were showing rebooting 90 times within about 75 minutes. Others online reported heat problems, networked computers causing it to reboot, cordless phones, florescent lights, buffer overflows, and a host of other way out there possibilities. People have returned their units, RMA and get a new one with the same problems.

Some solutions were to turn off the wireless and then it worked – not a permanent solution for your expensive wireless router to turn it into a wired one. This purported to stop the rebooting.

My solution after reading all these comments was to try shutting off the IPv6 on my one laptop that had it for the wireless connection. You can do this in vista by right clicking network to properties, then manage network connections, select your wireless, right click and check off the tab for IPv6. This, I am happy to say, worked! No more rebooting! It has been a full 30 minutes since it rebooted. Note this thing was restarting wireless every minute or so.

Why this is the case is speculation on my part. Possibly the IPv6 opens up a host of new attacks on the router which is why it may have worked for an initial period until the attacker discovered you are vulnerable. I really don’t know but it is clearly an issue for the 855. IPv6 is enabled by default on newer systems (2007 and later) and is not required (yet) to use the internet.

Sadly I still do not have solved the music streaming problem that I was originally trying to fix hoping that the rebooting was causing the occasional hiccup in the stream. Alas, still some trouble but I am one step closer.

Good luck – I hope this helps you in some way.
