Downgrade Firmware

The following is a collection of firmware that will allow you to roll back to an older revision that the official firmware from DLink will not allow.

Firstly, here is the instructions as provided by DLink Germany (note that is refers to the DIR855 but is the same process for other models):

Solution if a NA firmware from dlink.com was installed in the router and
the latest EU firmware cannot be installed any more.

This firmware / software may be used only for the specified product, you pay particular attention to
the hardware revision, for example: H / W B2, or Rev. A3!
The use of another / similar product could disable the product and leads
void your product warranty.

Im confused,i have a DIR-655EU Rev:A2 that was on FW:1.35NA which i would like to downgrade to FW:1.21EU.

I have successfully downgraded to FW:1.34WW but it will not let me downgrade using the NA to EU converter.

Also my Hardware version now says A4 which it is actually A2.

Can someone please tell me what im doing wrong

    Thanks:)

I’ve recently decide to download the 1.21 b.08 NA downgrade firmware from Dlink Germany to downgrade from 1.34NA, which worked without a problem. Stupid as I am, hope EU firmware would be better, upgraded to the 1.35 EU firmware (also from Dlink Germany) and now facing issue, but no longer can downgrade using the same 1.21 b.08 eu downgrade firmware… Any suggestions?

Hi there, I have updated the downgrade page to include a file that “SHOULD” allow you to then downgrade the 1.35EU firmware on the DIR-655.

Let me know how you go.

Thanks for the reply… Later that day, I’ve actually decide to visit the Russian DLink FTP and download the 1.21WW and it downgraded without any issue. Now back at 1.21 B.08 EU… I have no idea why 1.2x firmware is much faster in wireless performance…

Any chance for Rev. A4 to use 1.1x firmware?

I’m a little confused. I have a DIR-655 flashed to 1.35NA and am having troubles also. I see that there is a downgrade flash “DIR655Ax_FW134WW_Down_from1.35NA.zip 1.35 downgrade provided by T3gger”, if I flash down, do I than need to flash up to something else, or can I just run the downgrade flash? Thanks!

      Hi;

Downgrade firmware is just the same firmware as the original untouched version with one modification. The original firmware, once installed, will not allow you flash back to an older version firmware. The modified (downgrade) firmware doesn’t enforce this.

So once you install the 1.35NA downgrade firmware, you will have a router that has 1.35NA firmware but it will now allow you to install 1.34 if you wish.

Does that clear it up for you?

Hi, yes that does help. Which version would you suggest after downgrade? I’m in the US.
Thanks for the quick reply and help!

Well, respectfully, the NA firmwares are the worst as they employ an older USB driver, which from posts on this blog, have major issues. One user here has switched to WW in place of NA firmware to resolve his USB issues. I don’t have a 655 so I am not sure what the exact issues are in 1.34 and 1.35 but with the downgrade firmware, you have the ability to test both and then choose which you prefer. (I have an 855 which I am so close to turning it off and packing it away because of the lack luster stability/performance)

Thank you for your answere. Btw i found aut that it was my usb driver on my pc that was my problem and not the one on the dir-855. But i will have your suggestion in mind if i have more problems with the 1.23eu.

Thank you once again for taking your time to answere.

Dlink didn’t prevent switching firmware regions until late last year. You should be able to use NA downgrade firmware on it and then flash to the EU firmware. Have you tried this and it did not work?

Agreed, I have been looking at that one. Believe it or not, I am now back to using my DGL-4300 which didn’t need replacing in the first place and Ill probably just stick with it for now.

    Thanks.

Nothing in the logs other than normal activity. I actually got Amazon.com to accept the return of this router for a refund, so I will finally be done with this issue.

    Thanks for your help.

      My advice;

Move off DLink, their quality is no better than the no name routers that come out of China but charge as if they are high end routers. Further more, they are not committed to fixing the issues.

You might want to consider the Netgear 3700, everyone appears to be raving about them and they are about half the price.

Just out of interest, what does the log say when it reboots?

        December 6, 2010 at 10:26 pm | #18

just looks like the power got pulled and does a full reboot. not sure of the exact text.

Is there any way to boot the router from a usb key and flash to an old firmware?

      • DLink’ed Router
        December 7, 2010 at 11:05 am | #19

I am sure it is possible but not with DLink firmware. ie if we had open-wrt installed on it, the maybe, but DLink haven’t opened up the platform for installing open-wrt onto it. Ubicomm apparently do support it, just not DLink.

So short answer, no flashing from USB.

So there is nothing logged within your router that indicates a router reboot has occurred, other than the boot process? What appears in the log leading upto the reboot?

I upgraded to the 1.23wwb05 from the 1.23NA because my router suddenly started suffering from the constant reboot problem after 6 months of flawless operation. The 1.23ww changed nothing. There is nothing wrong with the 1.23WWb05 per se, just didn’t help me any. Now that I have take the router out of service, I was hoping to downgrade it to see if that helps. Every downgrade firmware I could find tells me that I cannot downgrade to that version.

Try this downgrade firmware. It is a few versions old and so you will need to then upgrade to the version you do want.

      Hi Steve,

So you are unable to install 855NA_FW122NAB05ForDowngrade.bin onto your router which currently has 1.23wwb05?

Firstly, what is 1.23 doing wrong so that you need to roll back?

Recovery firmware for that model is on this page. Flash it and then flash back to 1.10

    Hi;

I am from Australia and flashed mine from 1.12WW to 1.20NA on my 855 A2.

To be honest, all the DLink firmware is really bad and unstable but I will say that 1.12 was the most stable. These guys at DLink are simply just not doing enough testing when they release firmware.

    • April 17, 2010 at 8:13 am | #28

i’ve got a brand new 1 to 1 router replaced. stock firmware also the same as previous unit. revision A2 as well. but this time round i updated to the firmware listed above.

Reason being, Singapore Dlink’s copy is 1.20WWB04, i reckon the provided by you is more updated.

Anyway 1 day 5 hrs and running now, seemed great at the moment. Will post more result after a few days!

Feels like i’m(we) beta tester for DIR-855

ok, 1.20wwB06 lag to a halt as well at 1 day 19 hours mark.

Now on 1.22NA took the plunge last night flashing to North American’s firmware.

1st time the router went past 2 days mark without hanging yet. Advanced DNS still checked, DNS relay’s still on. Could this be the solution?

Will update when’s the reboot or hang/freeze up.

ok. confirmed for my DIR-855 A2 – 1.22NA works fine for more than 1 week, without slowing down and freezing.

to summarise i’ve bought it in Singapore(south east asia) original firmware is 1.12WW, got the set replaced thinking it’s hardware problem. both sets actually is working fine.

        firmwares tried :
        - stock 1.12WW
        - 1.20WW(both b4 and b6 version from different source)

all freeze up, non of them survived past 2 days mark without freezing.

firmware from dlink.com main site solved my problem 1.22NA

        good luck to the rest.

  14. April 14, 2010 at 8:23 pm | #31

thanks for the link. have you tried the downgrade firmware file?

i’m using 855 A2 revision, on 1.20WW firmware latest as listed on my local support(Singapore)

I’m from Singapore. called up my location Dlink support, i was told i can’t flash to 1.22NA firmware as it’s not meant for my locale and will void my warranty.

My gut feeling is it’s bullshit, so i’m really tempted to flash the router and see if it solve my daily rebooting routine. very very tempted unless with a mean to downgrade back to “restore” my warranty, i will not try 1.22NA.

Its a new router to me, just 2 weeks old. :)
