Potential WIFI power hack/mod for Ubicomm routers using Atheros Wifi Cards

I was looking at how to increase the range and improve my wireless experience from my DIR-855 and stubled across a company called Ubiquiti.

These guys produce ISP grade wireless equipment and have some serious range. They have a card called the SR71-A which is an Atheros chipset 2gHz and 5gHz PCI Mini (not PCI-E) wireless network card that outputs 250 mWatts from the radio. A typical retail card will put out from as low as 10 mwatts to no more than 100 mwatts, this thing is playing in a league of it’s own.

Just to put that in perspective, here is a table for output power:

mWatts: 50 100 200 250 500 1000 4000
dBm: 17 20 23 24 27 30 36

In theory, the drivers built into the device should work with this card so it should be interesting to try and replace the existing 2/5 gHz radio card with this.

Ubiquiti also have an SR71-E card which is a PCI-E notebook card which outputs a wopping 4oo mWatts. This thing should be able to connect to any router in range.

I am seriously thinking about putting one of these babies into my router and notebook but they are a little pricey.
