From my poll, it appears that people are still having to deal with DLink and their firmware.
Here are some options you can try if you are having any of the issues described in the poll:
- Make sure you do have the latest firmware, it always helps. Note that you cannot dlink compare version numbers from one region with another from another region. You have to look at the chklst.txt file to get the build number to determine that.
- If you are loosing your connection to DynDNS, try setting the router to “always connected” instead of ”connect on demand”.
- If you router is loosing it’s connection to the internet/WAN, the as above, try setting the router to “always connected” instead of ”connect on demand”.
- If you are experiencing wireless drops outs or signal strength issues, try changing the channels, you would be surprised what another wireless router on the same channel can do to your own wireless network. Also, this is very very important, if you have a cordless phone next to the router, move it away, this is a huge cause of wireless dropouts.
I hope this helps those that are less than impressed with their rather DLink router. I think I should charge DLink a support fee because the support Monkeys will not give you the suggestions above.
I have been getting reports from DIR855 and DGL4500 users that they are still having DNS issues which lead to locks ups.
Note however that they will admit that the router is not locking up as frequently as it has in the past (on average weekly lock ups).
Please continue to let me know (posts on my blog are preferable) if you are having any issues with DLinks firmwares. I still maintain that these guys went from Beta to Production far too quickly and without enough testing from the user community.
I have been notified that the DIR-628 is also suffering from the same problems.
Fun and games for DLink customers.
I am getting unconfirmed reports that DLink support stuff are being flooded by the issues detailed on this site. This is DLink globally and not just North America.
It appears that the stupid series firmware has created more problems for their products then they can deal with.
I suspect after this, they will loose a lot of market share as consumers loose faith in DLink’s ability to actually produce something that is worth paying for.
I have been getting emails from people who are experiencing similar issues but from different “D-Linked” Routers and access points.
So far the list appears to contain:
- DIR-825
- DIR-655
- DGL-4500
- DAP-1522
This is not a surprise as they all share a similar architecture and therefore similar firmware.
If you are also experiencing some of the issues highlighted on this blog, drop me an email or post a comment. I will add it to the list.
It should be noted that the following has had mixed success.

I was having a hell of a time with this router freezing up every 12-24 hours under heavy usage after upgrading to 1.20, like many of the posters here.
I played around for a while to see what I could figure out, and eventually fell back to my DGL-4300, which has to this day, never failed me!
About 2 weeks ago, I tried turning off:
“Enable DNS Relay”
under “Setup”->”Network Settings”
Reboot, and I.. amazingly haven’t had a freeze since!
I’m thankfully not seeing the wireless restarts people are, so I can happily say, this thing is back to being my full time router!
I just wanted to share to see if this might work for other people here.
I reset the router a number of times, reset firmware before doing all this… so I had fairly clean settings too.
Here’s to hoping it fixes some of your problems!
Issues list has been updated with the following as reported by mamv:
DIR-855 DIR-655 cannot perform wake on lan (WOL) over the internet. WOL works with a magic packet utility within the local network hence the PC NICS are configured correctly, but does not work over the WAN port.
There is a workaround and you can go to : http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r22315056-DIR655-Virtual-Server-broadcast-address-in-131 but that doesn’t really resolve the issue.
The Dynamic DNS issue where by the router disables the feature after some days of functioning has been exhibited on the DIR-655.
As stated earlier, this is issue is caused by the router itself as when the function of syncing IP address with Dynamic DNS works when moved off the router and onto another device inside the LAN serviced by the router.
