Issues Warning for DIR-665 Xtreme N 450 Gigabit Router

August 24, 2010 6 comments

I have had two emails complaining about the DIR-665 router performance and stability. Both emails highlighted the exact same issues, including getting support.

The router has the following reported issues:

  1. The 5 gHz band is a complete write off and you will struggle to get most of your devices to connect on this band.
  2. 5 gHz Radio has backwards compatibility issues and appears to only work with modern Intel chipsets.
  3. The 2 gHz band has signal strength issues on some channels.
  4. The 2 gHz band suffers from very frequent wireless dropouts.
  5. First level support are not yet prepared to support the product and will have you dancing on head performing mind numbing pointless procedures to fix what cannot be fixed by the user as it is a firmware issue.

The consensus is that, much like their previous product releases, DLink have rushed out to release something so that they can claim to be first but have worried about fixing the issues that I am sure they have identified, later on.

To them, being one of the first is paramount. I don’t think they can maintain their profit margins with this practice as word of mouth spreads and the last thing a company needs is to be associated with poor quality and really bad support.
