About
This blog is deicated to the Dlink Wireless N Routers. Its purpose is to document all the technical issues it comes with in the hope that they will be resolved.
The blog was created in response to users frustration with DLink. Customers would purchase the router with the expectation that they are good wireless routers as marketed by DLink only to find out that it is riddle with problems that render the unit useless.
DLink released a major firmware updated on all the Wireless N products a and unfortunately the firmware will not let you flash backwards. The issues with the current series are plentiful but the main ones are wireless restarts (every few minutes to hours) and router reboots randomly and often (hourly to daily).( refer to http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=187.0 )
However the real surprise was that the problem is across all of DLink’s Wireless N products, DIR655, DIR825, DGL4500 and DIR-855. ( Refer to http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=144.0 as an example )
People became very vocal about this, to the point of anger and venting, the mods did little to express any apology and in some cases, “pushed the buttons of users”, which only fueled the anger more. Then they began to delete posts and ban users, which ordinarily would be expected but they where only targeting those who complained about the firmware.
It took DLink quite some time to acknowledge these two main issues but then began to ask for volunteers to have engineers come out and try to diagnose why this is happening. (Refer to http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=7722.0 and http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=7690.0 as examples).
DLink have released beta firmware on some of the products to help solve the router reboot issues with some mixed success ( Refer to http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=8823.0 ) however the bad firmwares in question have not been pulled from their site and some have been up for more that 4-5 months, so potentially, the number of users affected is growing.
This Is why this site now exists.
can’t get airprint to work on new d-link dir-665 rtr- no firmware upgrades offered on thier site- would Tomato or other firmware fix?
Hi there;
I don’t think you will find any opensource firmware available for that router (and many of the DLink routers). You are unfortunately stuck with the crummy DLink software
I give up! Cisco & Linksys seem to know what they are doing and they’re cheaper! So bye bye D-Link!!
Hi,
I also have a dlink router model dgl-4100. It is a gigabit router and not wireless. I was also frustrated in the beginning because the router kept on restarting. I started to do some testing and found out that when I removed the Dynamic Fragmentation in the gamefuel setting (cause mine was enabled) I did not get the problem anymore.
I was directed to your blog. I must say I have had it with Dlink. Such a lousy product at such a price.
Hi,
Yes unfortunately DLink appear to have no pride in their products. The hardware spec is good but they put very little effort into their firmware, especially those cowboys in North America who release firmware on a whim.
Have you tried firmware 1.23, I know some people are having troubles with wireless but it is shaping up well, at least for me it is stable.
De que sirbe el nuevo firmware,?
Hi There;
If you are referring to the DIR-855 firmware, there are some new features which are really good but nothing that I would say is an absolute must have from my perspective.
Hello everyone! This is Daniel from Germany…
I’ve had a DIR-655 for four months now and so far I’ve only had troubles.
Doing some research on the internet, I found a dozen threads of complaining costumers and I ultimately ended up here.
My biggest issue is constant reboots. When it started to occur for the time the device rebooted each 5 minutes and then after some days “only” once a day. Then it wouldn’t synchronise my dnynds server anymore and after that the device wouldn’t even reconnect to the internet after rebooting on its own!
I’m using the dyndns feature as it’s essential to me and the sole reason why I sold my previous Apple router that aside from the missing dyndns function worked flawlessly. So in hindsight I made a very bad decision!
Obviously, D-Link doesn’t know how to appreciate constructive criticism as they keep deleting all negative comments on their website. That makes me quite angry. They also seem to be inept to find a solution for these kinds of problems.
At the moment I’m using an old router that I bought in 2001 because I’ve had it with this junk.
Greetings
Hi Daniel;
It really is frustrating that although the hardware may seem good, the firmware is just hopeless. The problem appears that DLink are not putting enough effort into fixing them, hence why I created this site.
My thinking is that if we apply enough pressure onto them, they will be forced to fix it. So this site needs more traffic to generate interest, I need to get more people coming to this site and posting.
Spread the word and see if we can get DLink to start releasing quality firmware.
I have been researching wireless routers for the past four days and I am so glad that I stumbled upon this site. Looks like im sticking with Linksys. I was really considering the DGL-4500 for my setup. Thank God I found this info. I hope everythings go well in the end for all the people who have the problems that you talk about on your list.
No Problem,
Nothing would make me happier than too see people not deal with the frustration of owning a DLink Wireless N product. They are just far too much effort and really just a waste of money.
To be honest, I would recommend the Netgear 3500L open source router and install DD-WRT on it. That is the absolute best option anyone can hope for.
woops, sorry about the fw, it isn’t that new, whehe.
newer fw out @ ftp://ftp.dlink.se/Products/dir-products/dir-855/drivers_firmware/DIR-855_FW_1.12EUb11.zip (maybe change your firmware url on your page)
and how about http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=7591.0 ? does it really fix the freeze and wireless problems ?
